The Brand We Chose

Luonto (Finnish for nature) is a family owned furniture maker founded in 1964 in Jurva, a small region of western Finland where furniture has been built for more than three centuries. They make sleeper sofas and recliners the slow way, by hand, to a standard most of the industry gave up on decades ago. Out of everything we could have put on our floor, this is the line we stand behind.

MADE IN FINLAND SINCE 1964

Every Luonto piece is designed and built in Finland using sustainably sourced materials. The frames are birch plywood, the comfort layers are wrapped by hand, and the sleeper mechanisms are engineered to open in one smooth motion and close without slamming. Luonto still runs as a family business, which is a big part of why the quality has never slipped. Craftsmen with decades of experience touch every sofa before it leaves the factory.

What's Inside Matters

EUROPEAN MADE, HELD TO A HIGHER STANDARD

Our sleepers are built with a mix of natural and synthetic materials, but because they are made in Europe, the synthetic materials are held to a far higher standard than what is typical in the United States. The EU sets a much higher bar for what is even allowed in furniture. The foam is CertiPUR-EU certified, the fabrics meet Oeko-Tex Standard 100 and REACH chemical limits, and the performance fabrics are completely PFC free. What that means for your home is simple: the furniture does not off-gas, and it releases next to nothing in the way of harmful chemicals compared to what is permitted here in the States.

Luonto craftsmanship in Finland

Finnish Craftsmanship

Founded in 1964 in Jurva, Finland, where furniture has been made for over 300 years. Every frame is cut on precision machinery, then hand sanded and assembled by skilled craftsmen. Built to last well beyond ten years.

Luonto sustainable materials

Built Sustainably

Luonto builds with birch plywood, recycled eco felt, and recycled PET bottles, and holds ISO 9001 and 14001 certification. Their factory even reuses excess heat to warm the surrounding community. Good for your home and the planet it came from.

Richard Wright

Meet Richard

Richard Wright

I'm Richard, Michael's brother, and I've spent 30+ years in furniture. For a while now I've been helping Seth and Michael behind the scenes, keeping the pieces moving so the studio runs the way it should. Three decades in this world has taught me what holds up, what's worth it, and how to steer people toward the right piece for how they actually live. I'm always happy to jump in wherever I'm needed. I live in Colorado with my wife and our two children.

A Little About The Place

ELEVEN YEARS IN THE MAKING

When Seth and Michael bought the building in 2013, it was a shell. They rebuilt it floor by floor, opened the showroom downstairs, and moved in upstairs. The room you're booked to visit is the room they live above.

Baltimore store before renovation, 2013

BEFORE: Where We Started in 2013

We rehabbed a building from the 1800s on a shoestring budget with Seth learning on the job to be the General Contractor. Seth's parents took their Habitat for Humanity skills and helped lay floors and paint walls. When you walk in the store, you can still see a steel beam tagged with "Bethlehem Steel," the steel plant where both Michael's grandparents worked in Baltimore.

AFTER: Where We Are Now

Since then, we've worked hard to pay off our building and home so we can pass those savings on to our customers. We will only sell you something we think is perfect for you at the lowest price our vendors allow. We joke with customers that we offer "DC Looks at Baltimore Prices." Now people visit the store virtually and chat with us online.

Designing Our Home

When we moved in our floor samples, we also moved in our own furniture. We live above our store, so we have and love the same products we've been selling for 10 years.
