WHY WE CHOSE LUONTO

We're Seth and Michael, and we live with Luonto. After more than a decade in this business, it's the line we came back to again and again, so it's the one we built our floor around. The same sleepers and recliners you see on our site are the ones in our own home upstairs. Everything on this page is why.

MADE IN FINLAND SINCE 1964

Luonto began in 1964 when Pentti Viitala started reupholstering used sofas in a hay barn on his family farm, selling them door to door in the small Finnish town of Kurikka. The idea was simple: high quality furniture at fair prices. Sixty years later it is still a family business, still made in Finland, and still built by hand. Every frame is birch plywood, every comfort layer is wrapped by hand, and every sleeper mechanism is engineered to open in one smooth motion and close without slamming.

Sixty Years In The Making

THE LUONTO STORY

1964

The Beginning

Pentti Viitala started reupholstering used sofas in a hay barn on the family farm, selling them door to door in the small town of Kurikka. The idea was simple: high quality furniture at fair prices.

1980s

Finnish Growth

The family built the Kurikka factory and acquired a local sawmill, bringing frame building in house. The first full production and sales team was hired.

1990s

Going Global

Timo Viitala took over as CEO and opened Luonto to new markets abroad, adding a second state of the art production line.

2000s

Expansion

A third production line and a growing team pushed output to roughly 550 retailers across 15 countries.

2012

North America

Luonto Furniture established a strong footing in North America.

2019

Charleston

Headquarters and warehousing came together at the Luonto Distribution Center, with close access to the port of Charleston, South Carolina.

Today

Sixty Years On

Still family run, still built in Finland, now serving a network of 400 authorized retailers, with more added every week.

Our Sustainable Heritage

BUILT-IN SUSTAINABILITY

Luonto's sustainable practices are not a program bolted on for marketing. As they put it, it is done simply because it is who they are and where they come from. Wood dust from the mill is pressed into pellets that heat the production lines through the Nordic winters, and the surplus heats a local school and nearby town buildings. Scraps go to local artisans instead of the landfill. Finland has managed its forests for sustainable yield for over a century, harvesting each stand once a generation so growth always outpaces what is taken. And because every piece is designed to be repaired rather than thrown away, a Luonto sofa stays out of the landfill far longer than most furniture.

How It's Built

WHAT'S INSIDE

The parts you never see are what decide how long a sofa lasts. Here is what Luonto builds into every piece.

Nordic Spruce

Solid Finnish spruce whose tight northern growth rings make it both strong and flexible, the same wood once used for Viking ship masts. It carries weight and movement without breaking.

Birch Plywood

Cross-laminated veneers that resist warping, splitting, and cracking, and stand up to humidity without the expanding and contracting of solid wood.

No-Sag Steel Springs

High-tensile steel springs, evenly spaced across every seat, that hold their shape under years of use. A recycled-fiber felt layer sits between the springs and the foam to protect it.

Cold-Cured Foam

High-resilience foam that springs back to shape instead of sagging, and sleeps cooler than memory foam. CertiPUR-EU certified for low emissions.

Dacron-Wrapped Cushions

Every cushion is wrapped in dacron fiber so it stays smooth and lump-free and keeps its look over time.

Certified At Every Step

PROVEN, NOT JUST PROMISED

Every material Luonto uses is verified by an independent, globally recognized certifying body. From the forest the wood comes from to the chemicals kept out of the fabric, here is what backs it up.
